Irish groom's wedding speech with a difference

Claire Williamson

It's a wedding speech with a difference.

One of the key moments of any wedding is the speeches - but they aren't often delivered in song.

But proud bride Claire Mullan from Cookstown was left stunned when her new husband blew their guests away by singing a version of American Pie with lyrics reflecting their relationship.

The bride tied the knot with Aidan Johnston from Downpatrick at their wedding in Cavan on Saturday.

Their guests came from Derry, Tyrone, Down as well as Equador, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, England and more - and they were in for a musical treat.

Claire said she was "completely blown away" - as were their "dumbstruck guests".

"It combined humour, wit and charm with a touch of genius.

"Every single line of the song was directly relevant and true to our relationship. All our guests, and our venue Farnham Estate in Cavan had never seen the like of it before."

And while her new husband Aidan may appear confident in singing the speech in the video - Claire said it took a lot for him to pluck up the courage to do it.

She said: "He really challenged himself to pluck the courage and sing it after writing the song last weekend.

"It followed brilliantly from his preceding speech which set the context of our first meeting in Belfast in 2008 and his difficulty in wooing me as I played hard to get. The only thing that got me interested in him eventually was a shared love for BRMC."

Now after a weekend of celebrations the newly-wed Mr and Mrs Johnston are off to Italy on honeymoon.
