Friends like these: Dog stands guard beside dead pal's body for several hours
It's well known that dogs are the most loyal of creatures.
These heartbreaking pictures show a dog wistfully watching over his friend's dead body.
Samuel Flores was driving along a road in Dallas, Texas when he noticed the Great Pyrenees dog standing guard beside another dog who had been knocked down by a car.
He alerted local animal activists who rushed to the scene.
Jessy Faiferlick told the Dodo that the dog barked as she approached him but once he realised she was there to offer help he offered her his paw.
"When I got there we took him to my car and loaded his friend up to get scanned.
"You could tell from the blood in the road that he had dragged her body out of the road up onto the grass.
"When we drove away he got into the small back window of my car to look for his friend," Julie Fennell, another animal activist said.
The women estimate that the Great Pyrenees had guarded the dead dog's body for several hours.
"He is a very loyal dog," Fennell said. "When we were driving to the shelter he sat with his paw on my shoulder."
It is not known whether the dogs are missing from their homes or if they are strays.
Dallas Animal Services are searching for their owners and are tending to the Great Pyrenees who had no collar or microchip.
"He made a friend," Fennell said, "Whether it was his companion in his yard at home or whether they met up as strays, but something made him stay by her side."
