ACTOR Chadwick Boseman hits the big time with his lead performance in this James Brown biopic.

He plays the role of Brown over some of the most dramatic years in the life of the Godfather of Soul.

The movie charts how Brown overcame a troubled childhood to become one of the most influential and revered figures in soul music.

Director Tate Taylor, who cast Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer in his last hit movie, The Help, again casts those two stars in supporting roles.

The movie depicts Brown's extraordinary live performances which earned him the title of the hardest working man in showbusiness.

But it looks at his demons too - including his drug use, his abusive tendencies and his difficult relationship with his mother, played by Davis in the film.

Dan Aykroyd pops up as his colourful manager Ben Bart in some of the film's most dramatic scenes.

But the best reviews are for Boseman, who is getting raves for his performance as Brown but on and off the stage where he loved to be. He's already generating serious chatter as awards season approaches.

Get On Up opens this weekend.
