Remember mixtapes? Those incessantly personal collections of your favourite tunes typically cobbled together for a loved one.

Well Netflix has decided to bring them back, sort of.

The media streaming giant has launched a new service called Flixtapes, which allows users to create playlists of their favourite TV shows and share them with friends.

"Flixtape is a short playlist of Netflix titles based around a theme, a mood, or message. It’s like a mixtape, but for Netflix," the comapny said on its website.

So far the creation of Flixtapes are limited to whole titles, rather than short clips of even episodes.

Netflix will also develop recommendations based on the name and content of the Flixtape.

From Netflix's point of view having people create their own playlists of content is sure to be very valuable data that they'll in turn use to improve their recommendation algortihm.
