A 13-year-old boy accidentally shot himself while his horrified friends watched on Instagram Live.

Malachi Hemphill was filming himself holding a gun when it suddenly went off.

His mother Shaniqua Stephens heard the gunshot and ran upstairs with her daughter to find her son lying in a pool of blood.

Shaniqua, who is from Atlanta, told WXIA: "I heard a big boom. I couldn’t tell if it was a gun shot or what.

"We kicked in the door. We found him just laying there in a pool of bloodn.

"My daughter screamed and said, 'Mom turn his phone off!' As I proceeded to look at his phone he was on Instagram Live."

Malachi was rushed to a hospital, where he sadly died a short time later.

Shaniqua said: "There was about 40 to 50 kids outside, I guess these were the kids that were watching on live that live in the area.

"I guess when it happened they just ran over here."

She said she believes Malachi's death was a tragic accident and she doesn't believe he took his own life.

Detectives are investigating how Malachi got the gun.

Shaniqua is urging people to keep an eye on their children in a bid to prevent further tragedies.

Stephens is now urging parents to keep a vigilant eye on what their children are doing.

She said: "Monitor their phones, just monitor your children.

"More now than anything."
