UP to 20pc of the self-employed fail to file their tax returns on time, new research shows. People with taxable income have until the end of next month to file a tax return with the Revenue Commissioners. But large numbers of the self-employed are late filing their returns and end up having to pay penalties, according to taxback.com.
New-home sales in US at six-month low
Sales of new US homes fell to a six-month low in August, figures show. The fourth straight monthly decline during the peak buying season in the US suggests the country's housing market is still far from a recovery. The Commerce Department said new-home sales fell 2.3pc to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 295,000. That is less than half the 700,000 that economists say must be sold to sustain a healthy housing market.
EasyJet founder plans 'Fastjet' firm
EasyJet says its founder and 38pc shareholder Stelios Haji-Ioannou plans to set up another airline and call it Fastjet. EasyJet, which resolved a dispute with its top shareholder over the EasyJet brand licence in 2010, said it was ready to act should rights established under previous agreements be infringed.
A third of workers cut contributions

ENI resumes work in Libya after unrest
ITALIAN oil giant ENI has resumed oil production in Libya more than six months after civil unrest brought oil and gas output in the country to a halt, the firm said. A statement said ENI resumed production at the Abu Attifel oil field. ENI, working in partnership with Libya's state-run oil company NOC, opened 15 wells, bringing production to 31,900 barrels a day.
