Primark hoping to woo French with cheap chic

IRISH discount retailer Primark is saying 'Bonjour' to the French fashion scene today as it opens its first store in the fashion-conscious country.

Primark -- which started in Dublin's Mary Street as Penneys in 1969 -- trades in eight countries across Europe and today it makes it nine. It will open its doors at noon today at the Marseilles Grand Littoral commercial centre, with a store measuring 62,800 sq ft.

Its arrival into France brings its roll call of stores to 269 as Primark present its 'fast fashion' model to the acknowledged home of haute couture and iconic designer names like Chanel, St Laurent and Louboutin.

However, this is no part time romance for Primark, but a full-on French love affair for the retailer which is a major profitable arm of the global retail group Associated British Foods (ABF).

In February, Primark turns its focus on Dijon, with a store planned at Toison d'or and, after that, it is truly embracing a 'Springtime in Paris' agenda. Three stores will open around the capital's sprawling suburbs in the coming months, with locations at Villeneuve La Garenne, Aulnay-sous-Bois and Creteil.

Primark employs almost 55,000 people, with 300 new jobs being created in Marseilles.
