Hays, one of the country's most prominent recruitment firms, is running recruitment campaigns in Poland, the UK and Canada to get Irish workers to return to the country.
The FTSE 250 company employs almost 9,000 staff in 33 countries, including about 90 in Ireland. Speaking to the Irish Independent Hays Ireland's managing director, Richard Eardley said that major Irish companies in sectors such as construction, tech and finance are now keen for skilled Irish workers who may have emigrated during the recession to return to the country.
Since the start of 2008 the UK, Australia and Canada have proven to be some of the most popular destinations for Irish people leaving, with about 115,000, 89,000 and 20,000 Irish emigrating to each country respectively.
"Australia, Canada and the UK are the main places that people went to so they're the places that we're now looking at," he said. "We've done advertising in Canada, Poland, Australia and the UK. It's probably been in the past six months or so, when the demand from customers has been strong enough."
He said that the firm was recently recruiting in the UK for finance positions and in Poland for construction workers.
He added that in his experience the view of the country's economy for the Irish abroad tends to lag "about six to twelve months" behind reality.
"When you tell people how things are over here now, they are surprised," he said. "What we're trying to do is get the message out, say that the economy is good again and if you're thinking about coming back, now's a good time."
When asked what sectors he would identify as being most likely to look to recruit abroad, he identified both the tech sector and the food and drinks industry.
He added: "The construction sector is now very open to people returning to Ireland. They would always have a preference for people who would have worked in Ireland and know Irish building regulations."
