Harrods the latest arrival at Gatwick's new shopping hub
DUTY-FREE enthusiasts will be happy to hear that Gatwick is ramping up its shopping facilities to compete with some of the biggest airports in the world. Some big names are setting up shop at its South Terminal this year. Harrods is opening a new 6,500 square foot store on August 1 and 12 new or refreshed outlets will have been opened by the end of 2013 – other major brands include Kurt Geiger, Hugo Boss and Lacoste.
Two other new names, Aspinal of London and Ernest Jones, are the first airport outlets of their kind in the UK.
Gatwick management says 93pc of its passengers visit a shop before boarding and 86pc make a purchase and the busy summer season is particularly important for shopping sales.
It is rolling out Samsung 'info tablets' alongside the retail revamp, which will offer instant shopping information at key footfall points throughout the airport as well as flight details.
