BUSINESSES have been warned to be aware of their online reputation as the vast majority of shoppers look for reviews before buying.

Company bosses are urged to do regular internet checks to ensure any negative reviews are countered.

Online reputation management company said firms must not ignore the internet.

Managing director Mark Hall said: "Quite often we work with companies faced with disgruntled former members of staff, unprofessional competitors or -- in extreme cases -- ex-partners who post unjust and fake web content in the form of reviews or blog posts.

"These may go unnoticed by the company for quite some time, and have a devastating effect on new sales."

Gotjuice said more than 85pc of purchasers research the internet for reviews and feedback before making a purchase, and 70pc will not make an inquiry if they read negative mentions of a brand or company.

Gotjuice recommended that companies ask customers for a review after the deal is done, become a guest author on industry sites and allocate responsibility for checking online reputation to a member of staff.

"Every business should be in full control of their online reputation," Mr Hall said.
