Dotcom finalises Mega plans
Not one to let the prospect of jail time put him off, embattled New Zealand-based German internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom has been busy putting the final flourishes to his new venture.
Dotcom was spectacularly arrested at his Kiwi pile early last year after police swooped in a raid during his birthday party. Dotcom owns and ran Megaupload, a file-sharing business that was one of the world's most popular websites until it was shut down by authorities.
The site got Dotcom, also known by his birth name, Kim Schmitz, into a whole lot of bother.
The FBI wasn't impressed with it and wants Dotcom extradited to the US to face charges ranging from money laundering to racketeering.
The FBI claims the website generated more than $175m in criminal proceeds. But as that battle trundles on, Dotcom has just advertised for a chief financial officer for his new company – Mega.
He once partied at Humewood Castle in Kiltegan, Co Wicklow, taking part in a duck hunt there. The stately home was sold to Liberty Global chairman John Malone before Christmas for a knockdown €7.2m.
