Busy shopping area evacuated as suspicious package found at Apple store

An Apple store on a busy shopping street has been evacuated after a suspicious package was handed in to the shop's staff.

The incident occurred at around 10am on Wednesday morning on New Street in Birmingham city centre, UK.

Police responded to the scene and cordoned off a section of the shopping area after the package was reported

“Police have cordoned off a small section of New Street in Birmingham city centre as a precaution following reports that a suspicious package was handed in to the Apple store," West Midlands Police said.

“The store has been evacuated as a precaution while specialist officers examine the package.”

It is understood that the Apple store has since reopened,.

The UK is on high alert after a suspected terrorist hijacked a lorry and ploughed it into crowds at a Christmas market in Berlin.

Trains running through the New Street area were reportedly affected by the scare.
