Wife here for support - Miliband
Ed Miliband today played down suggestions that he might give a more prominent role to his wife Justine, after she won plaudits for her stylish appearance at the Labour conference in Brighton yesterday.
Mrs Miliband - better known by her maiden name Justine Thornton - turned heads as she congratulated her husband with a kiss at the end of his keynote speech to the gathering.
Her outfit - a Bassey Jacquard floral print dress and navy blue patent shoes from LK Bennett, accessorised with jewellery she was given as an 18th birthday present - was described as "stunning" by media observers.
Mr Miliband today insisted she was in Brighton to support him rather than as part of a new strategy to put her on the front line in the run-up to the 2015 general election.
"It's been fantastic for me to have Justine here at conference, and she has been brilliant," the Labour leader told ITV1's Daybreak.
"She's first and foremost got her own career as an environmental lawyer. She's a mum, she's obviously my wife as well.
"She wanted to come here to support me and it's been great to have her here, but it's just nice for me and that's basically why she's here. It's about that."
Mrs Miliband, who married the Labour leader in 2011, told a fringe meeting at the conference on Sunday that she was ''more than a dress'' as she pre-empted the media coverage of her outfit.
She added she would campaign for Labour at the next general election "wearing whatever dress the media deem necessary to get us through".
