The Web Summit may have cited the apparent high cost of hotel rooms in Dublin as one of the reasons to move to Lisbon, but judging by hotel websites, attendees next year won't exactly be getting a great deal on prices either, with the cost of a room during Web Summit 2016 week up sharply on the price for the same room outside of Web Summit week.

One week before the event, a stay at the Lisboa Plaza Hotel costs €106, while a week later, when the Web Summit is scheduled to take place, the same room can be had for €216. That is a whopping 104pc mark up.

The Radisson Blu Hotel in Lisbon offers rooms for one person from €68 the week before the event - and from €280 during it. Earlier this week, the Web Summit's Daire Hickey told RTE that a hotel room in Lisbon could be had for less than €200 for four nights and that the event had been assured hotel prices would be kept "incredibly low" there for the duration of the summit.
