Drone technology conference to take place on Achill Island

Bono is set to close out next week's Web Summit with a discussion on the future of music, the event's organisers have said.

The singer, who courted controversy last month when U2's new album was pre-loaded onto iPhone 6 handsets, is set to be joined by the founder of Soundcloud, Eric Wahlforss and Dana Brunetti, the executive producer of the Kevin Spacey Netflix series 'House Of Cards'.

Organisers of the event have said that it is now sold out, with 20,000 people due to attend the RDS between next Tuesday and Thursday.

The event will feature venture capitalist Peter Thiel and Limerick-born online payments entrepreneur John Collison. Other guest speakers recently added to the line-up include Premier League football stars Rio Ferdinand and Philippe Senderos and UFC sports star Conor McGregor.

Ireland tops, says IBM

Ireland has been named the top-ranking destination for `added value' for foreign direct investment projects in IBM's 2014 Global Location Trends report.

The report said that Ireland continued to be the top performer in the world, resulting from the country's success in attracting research and development activities in life sciences and ICT, coupled with high-value investment in financial services.

Conference on drones set to make Achill buzz

A major international conference on drone technology is to be held from November 7-9 in Castlebar and Achill Island in Mayo.

"Ireland has a great opportunity to position itself as the best country in Europe to test new technology and utilise new trends in the storage of data." says Philip McNamara, the San Francisco-based head of business development for Irish company VoxPro.

Attendees will include former Hailo founder Jay Bregman and SkyCatch founder Christian Sanz.

The conference will deal with design, testing, manufacturing and construction of leading technological sectors with a particular focus on drones and data.
