Twitter to let celebrities 'turn off' abuse

Twitter is to give ‘verified’ users a new button that will allow them to ‘turn off’ abusive messages and comments directed at them.

Verified’ users include celebrities, politicians, journalists and other people in public roles. A verified user is characterised by a small blue tick beside the account holder’s name.

The feature is currently being rolled out on the Twitter accounts of iPhone and iPad users and could eventually include all Twitter users.

The feature was spotted by the technology blogger Anil Dash and was confirmed by Twitter.

The social networking giant, which employs over 200 people in Ireland, has admitted in the past that it has a problem with harassment and abuse on its service. It recently updated the ability for users to report abuse.
