You can vote for a better Doom box

Daniel Anderson

Bethesda and id Software are ramping up for the release of a revamped Doom, and you can help it look a lot better in the box

There's a new Doom coming, and it's from id Software with a little help from Bethesda. Everything we've seen to date suggests its going to be gorgeously gory - two words which make total sense in the context of this long running franchise.

The game might look good but the same can't be said of the original box art, which is utterly bland and basically the game equivalent of those big head DVD covers you get for movies which didn't really get a theatrical release. It's all the more weird because this is a first person title, you don't even see the Space Marine while playing, so it should sell what you actually get up to.

There has been a lot of criticism of the cover, and Bethesda has responded by giving folks a choice. They've put together two alternative covers and you can vote for which one you'd prefer in a Twitter poll. The thing is, each is quite different and it would be fair to say that one of them is significantly more interesting, lurid and just plain cooler. Here's the poll which you can vote on - one is already in the lead by quite a margin.

Yea option B is ahead with 69 percent of votes right now - and we're surprised its not higher. That demon is pretty menacing but there's only one of them - the other really shows off a battle in Hell, not to mention giving us a taste of the melee action in the new game. It sounds like either of these options will only be available as a reversible sleeve, so we'll still have to look at the boring one on shelves. Shame.

Doom is out on the 13th of May 2016.
