WhatsApp now lets you jazz up your messages

Mark O'Beirne

WhatsApp has released a new update that adds text formatting options like bold, italics, and strikethrough, so you can add emphasis to your messages.

WhatsApp released an update earlier this month that added text formatting options on Android.

However, only Google Play beta testers could modify their messages, adding italics, bold text, and even a strikethrough. Now, these features are rolling out to all WhatsApp users on Android.

To add formatting to your messages, simply use the associated symbol before and after the text you want to modify.

To make text bold, write the desired words inside asterisks, *like so*.

For italics, use underscores, _like this_.

And for a strikethrough, add the words you want to put a line through between tildes, ~as in this example~.

It’s also possible to combine these commands by combining the symbols. So, to add bold and italics to text, you would use both asterisks and underscores. _*It’s not as hard as it sounds*_

WhatsApp’s latest update, available to beta testers, lets users quick reply to messages from the notification panel. Expect this update to roll out to the wider user base in the near future.
