WhatsApp adds a huge number of emoji

Emma Clark

WhatsApp users on Android can now use a variety of new emoji thanks to a new update. The OS has now caught up with web and iOS users.

WhatsApp has rolled out a new Android update that adds a huge number of new emoji.

The update adds a variety of new facial expressions, including upside down smiles, hugs, rolling eyes, and extreme sadness; gestures, such as the infamous middle finger emoji and the vulcan salute; family options, including LGBT choices; food, such as a popcorn box or taco; nature icons like the shamrock and unicorn; and a separate tab for sports and activities.

If these sound familiar, it's because they've been available on WhatsApp Web and the iOS version of the mobile app.

To take full advantage of these new emoji, the person you're sending them to also needs to have the update installed. Otherwise all they'll see are blank squares, thus robbing you of your moment of glory as you seamlessly use emoji instead of words or demonstrate exceptional comedic timing.

The update is being added to the Google Play Store, but if you need to get your hands on these new emoji ASAP you can download the update from the WhatsApp website.
