Snapchat may add audio and video calling

Emma Clark

Snapchat may soon roll out audio and video calling, as well as some other nifty features, if code within the app is anything to go by.

The code for the Snapchat app includes hints at what might the future might hold for the popular messaging app.

Features including audio and video calling, Stickers within the chat interface, and more have been spotted in the code. Of course, Snapchat has to roll out the updated code to its userbase before these features will become available.

Should Snapchat make these features available, it would cover off some of the features of traditional messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Google Hangouts, and others.

Snapchat recently shut down its selfie lenses store despite it reportedly being a lucrative business. The company will want to replace that revenue, and Stickers seem like a good way to do so. Apps such as WeChat and Line have made millions by selling Stickers on their platforms.

Of course, it’s possible that Snapchat is simply testing these features; it doesn’t mean they’ll become publicly available and even if they do, they may not take the same form.
