Pinterest adds new visual search tool

Pinterest is launching a new search feature today on Android, iOS, and the web that will allow users to search for visually similar items to pinned photos.

Pinterest has launched a new visual search feature, which lets you select a specific item in a pinned photo and then search the site for visually similar items.

To use the feature, click the search button in the top right when viewing a photo, and then drag the adjustable highlight box over the item that’s caught your eye. Visually similar items will be displayed below the pinned post, and can be refined even more by adding keywords.

Previously, users had to take to Google’s image search if they wanted to find visually similar images, but Pinterest’s new feature will make searching more convenient and flexible.

Pinterest engineer Andrew Zhai wrote about the feature on the site’s blog. Zhai wrote, “There are dozens of interesting items within a Pin’s image; we want to give Pinners a tool to learn more about these items.”

The feature is being rolled out on Android, iOS, and the web today.
