Netflix's secret menu could put an end to buffering

Mark O'Beirne

Netflix has a secret menu that could put an end to buffering, even if your connection isn't quite up to scratch.

Thanks to advancements in modern technology, we're no longer used to having to wait for something to load on the internet. That's why it almost physically hurts when the little buffering wheel appears, particularly if it happens at a key moment in our favourite show.

A newly discovered secret menu on Netflix could put an end to that possibility. Thrillist discovered the hack via Reddit, which is actually quite easy to access...unless you're on a console, that is.

Here are the commands you need to hit:

  • Windows: Hold down Shift + Alt + Left click
  • OS X: Hold down Shift + Opt + Left Click
  • Chrome browser: Hold down Ctrl + Shift + Alt/Opt + S
  • Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation 3: Using the directional pad, click up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, up, up, up, up.

If you do it correctly, a menu labelled Diagnostics will appear. Select the Stream Manager option and then select Manual Selection.

This brings up a range of buffering rates, which you can select from and then click Apply. Selecting a higher rate will result in a higher quality video, but you may have to wait for your show to load.

If you're willing to sacrifice some picture quality, you can cut down on the amount of waiting that you'll have to do to see how all your favourite shows wrap up.
