Eir offering free EU roaming to Irish customers ahead of new deadline

Mark O'Beirne

Eir has become the first mobile operator in Ireland to offer customers free roaming within the EU as part of a range of price plans.

Eir mobile, part of Eir which was formerly Eircom,  offer free roaming within the EU ahead of the EU deadline of June 2017.

The mobile operator launched a range of price plans under the "Roam for Free" umbrella. This lets users use their existing call and text allowances anywhere in the EU, and provides an additional 1GB of EU roaming data.

Existing Eir subscribers who signed up to Eir Mobile individually or as part of a bundle since last September should receive an SMS to tell them of this benefit, which will be applied to their account before the end of April 2016.

New customers will be able to get free EU roaming as part of plans that start from €20 per month.

The EU has put an agreement in place to end roaming charges across the 28 member states by June 2017. With Eir taking the incentive in Ireland, it may only be a matter of time before others follow suit. Holiday season is approaching and this could be one factor that tempts customers to a new network.
