The Call of Duty series has passed 250 million units sold. While sales figures for Black Ops III are yet to be released, it probably contributed.

Activision today revealed that the Call of Duty series has surpassed 250 million units sold.

The latest entry in the long-running franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, was the top-selling game of 2015. It took that crown "by a wide-margin" in terms of both units and dollars, according to Activision.

Making the announcement, Activision's Communications Manager, Scott Lowe, wrote "Each year, we are reminded of the passion of the Call of Duty community." Activision senior vice president Rob Kostich thanked those involved with developing the Call of Duty games as well as "the incredible passion from the Call of Duty community."

The Call of Duty series has never been a slouch. Even the original title, released back in 2003, sold 4.5 million copies and was well reviewed across the board. It has been going from strength to strength since then.

Call of Duty isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future and Kostich says that Activision is looking forward to what is to come in 2016.
