BlackBerry director hints at Android-only future

BlackBerry looks set to abandon its own operating system as it realises that it has a more promising future on Android.

BlackBerry delved into the world of Android with the release of the Priv, and the writing could be on the wall for its own OS.

BlackBerry director Damian Tay indicated that this is the beginning of the company's transition to Android. "As we secure Android, over a period of time, we would not have two platforms, and may have only Android as a [smartphone] platform.

Tay did say that the two will co-exist for the time being, but the end could very well be in sight.

"The future is really Android," he said. "We went for Android essentially for its app ecosystem. In addition, all the enterprise solutions that we have been doing have been cross-platform for a long time now. So it's a natural progression towards Android."

It's hard to compete with Android, and it looks like BlackBerry is ready to shift its focus away from that fight.
