Social Media: Networks for business

Google Helpout could be money-spinner

Paul O'Mahony

Google's 'Helpouts' has just been released, which Google describes as "real help from real people in real-time".

This is an interesting development, which allows people to get personalised live training over video from experts worldwide. This is not the same as watching a "how-to" video on YouTube, as this is a personalised one-on-one experience.

Outside of the obvious benefits for users who are looking to be educated in any topic – from art and music, to home and garden, and everything in between, – there is great potential here for all small business owners.

Google Helpouts allows you to set yourself up as a knowledge provider on this platform. You have the option of charging for your services or offering them for free. Payments are made using Google Wallet, which is a straightforward service, with Google taking a 20 per cent share of revenues.

While accepting payment is an obvious revenue earner for your business where you can promote your services over social media, you may also consider offering your services for free initially as a great way for you to leverage social media to get yourself an outstanding reputation for excellence in your field.
