Smile! The instant camera is back.

The Fujufilm Instax Mini 8 is a Polaroid-style instant camera. I took it out at a party and everyone, including the Instagram and Snapchat-addicted set, gathered around to coo over it like it was a newborn baby. Snaps were taken and friends huddled around to await the “instant” photo processing.

The Instax is easy to use. The camera does all the hard work for you by monitoring and advising the right exposure setting for the best image quality. It's important to always check that it's at the right exposure. Simply turn it on, direct it at your subject, the LED light will indicate what setting your exposure should be on, flick it to that and snap. Your main subject should be no more than three feet in front of the camera for maximum quality.

Your image will come out straight away. It will develop in about ten seconds. There’s no need to shake it or warm it up.

The images are credit card-sized snaps but they come with a frame which you can make notes on, write a message or mark the date the photo was taken.

It comes in eight colours, with a matching strap, and considering it mainly comes out at parties, the matte finish handy for protecting your camera against finger grease. It's not too bulky and easy to grip.

It requires AA batteries, which are included. The back has a slot to load packs of Fujifilm specifically designed for the Instax Mini series. Two packs of film are included in the box. Each pack of film comes with 10 photos, so use them wisely because they’re pretty limited and pretty expensive. A twin pack of film is about €24.99.

I thought it would just be a novelty product that I'd toss aside after a while but I take it out at every special occassion. Unlike the readiness and unlimited quantity of social media photography, paying for film has forced me to be cautious and save my Instax snaps memories worth cherishing. The physical value of each photograph is momentous. Compare prices.
