My New Year’s resolution was to give up spending a small fortune on coffee every morning on my way to work. But I didn’t fancy waking up a little earlier to make a decent cup of coffee at home. And I didn’t have the disposable income required to throw €500 on a fancy countertop machine.
I wanted something that’s compact, affordable, idiot-proof and produces a good cup of coffee. Simple.
I tried out the Inissia, which is the entry-level Nespresso machine. At first glance it met my first criteria: compact. In fact, it's so compact and lightweight that I can pop it in my bag and take it into work with me so I can get my java jolt during that post-lunch slump.
It doesn’t make a mess. As well as a perforated removable drip tray, there’s an internal bin for used pods, so several drinks can be made before it needs emptying. And it also comes in an array of colours.
At €69.95 it’s affordable. The capsules are about 36 cent each and the Inissia comes with 16 capsules to get you started.
The Inissia is also easy to use, as soon as you realise that there’s no power switch. It has two buttons; one delivers a single shot of espresso, while the other produces a longer and less intense cup of coffee. To work it, you fill the water tank at the back of the machine and press your button of choice, for one second, to bring the machine to life.
Both buttons flash while the machine is warming up, and once the water hits the right temperature, the buttons will glow a steady green and out pours your coffee. The Inissia will stop by itself when it’s finished.
The final criteria was taste and I was pretty impressed, despite the fact that the Inissia has a limited drinks menu. The quality is just as good as the coffee from other Nespresso machines. Flavoursome, rich and smooth. It has the same 19-bar pressure to produce its crema so you get that gorgeous silky finish that you usually only ever get from your local barista. Compare prices.
