Smartphone now the ‘go to’ device for news for most people in the morning

The smartphone is now the go-to device for news for most Irish people in the morning, a new survey has revealed.

More than a third (35pc) of Irish people have said their phone is the first device they reach for for news, while the number of people reading printed newspapers has almost halved in the past seven years from 50pc to 27pc.

The newly-released Digital News Report Ireland 2022 found that Ireland’s news outlets remain “relatively well-trusted” by international standards, with 52pc of Irish people saying they can trust most of the news most of the time. This is above the average of 42pc globally.

Greece and the US have the lowest trust scores of the 46 measured countries, with just one-quarter (26pc) of people trusting most of the news most of the time.

Eight out of 10 people said they access news at least once a day via any platform.

WhatsApp continues to be the most used social media application for any reason, with 70pc of Irish people surveyed using it.

Only a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds (25pc) are interested and engaged in news, dropping from 56pc in 2016.

RTÉ News remains the most trusted news brand in Ireland at 74pc, while the Irish Independent (68pc) was among the most trusted newspapers in Ireland.

There was also evidence of a post-Covid slump in news consumption. The report found 41pc of people in Ireland avoid the news, with many saying they felt it negatively affected their mood. This is a sharp rise from 30pc five years ago.

Many said there was too much about Covid-19 and politics in the news, while 29pc said they believed the news was untrustworthy or biased. Another 29pc said they were worn out by how much news was available.

One in six Irish people (16pc) paid for news online through a subscription, one-off payment or donation in the past year, just below the average of 17pc internationally.

More than 40pc of people in Norway pay for news online, while only one in 11 (9pc) pay for it in the UK.
Ireland was also found to have the highest number of subscriptions to foreign news outlets per capita compared with every other nation in the survey.

Almost half (48pc) of news subscriptions in Ireland are for foreign news outlets, the report found.

The only country that came close was Canada on (39pc), with the majority of other countries registering figures in single digit percentages.

Radio has remained a strong medium for news in Ireland, with 31pc of people getting their first briefing in the morning through this medium. This compares well with the UK’s 17pc and the EU’s 19pc.

Ireland has the highest usage of podcasts per capita of all countries surveyed, with close to half (46pc) of people saying they had listened to a podcast in the past month, well above the average of 34pc.

The report also found social media is now the main source of news for those aged 18 to 24, with 39pc preferring it to other media.

Nine out of 10 people are paying attention to climate change coverage in the media with 44pc wanting media to focus more on governments and large corporations, while 21pc believe the focus should be on what ordinary citizens can do.
