Communicorp is making a new push into online with a bid to bolster its radio stations' audience through smartphone apps.

The company, which operates Today FM, Newstalk and 98FM, has launched a new app for all of its radio stations and podcasts. Called GoLoud, the app also acts as a platform for popular Irish and international podcasts and music playlists.

The new GoLoud app has links to Today FM, Newstalk, 98FM, Spin 1038 and Spin South West. It will also house a large selection of podcasts, including popular independent shows such as the BlindBoy Podcast.

"This is a game-changer for Communicorp Media, one that sees us firmly place ourselves in the audio market," said Adrian Serle, Communicorp Media Group CEO.

The move is part of the company's efforts to move more of its audio business to digital platforms as the independent radio sector in Ireland continues to face challenges including competition and the shift of spending within the advertising market to digital.

Denis O'Brien-owned Communicorp's last financial results showed a loss of €500,000 for 2017, an improvement on the previous year's €2.1m loss.
