Where do teenagers and young adults shop online these days? Sure, there’s Amazon, Boohoo and eBay: but where else are Irish teen euros being spent online? And how do they pay?

Transition year student Lucy Hatton (15) goes through some of the sites on her radar.

1. Depop

What is it?

Depop is an internet marketplace that is easy to use because of its Instagram-like interface and ease of access.

This allows me to follow the profiles of sellers with goods I like, as well as saving the details of an item I’m interested in buying or private messaging a seller.

The application is particularly popular among young people due to the resurgence of vintage-style clothes, as

most of the products being sold there are of the same category.

It also allows young people to sell their own clothes and belongings with ease.

What can you buy?

The app covers everything from clothes and shoes to skincare products and makeup.

How much do you typically spend?

You’ll get a pair of Adidas shoes for €50, which is €45 less than a retail price of €90 in Dublin shops.

Any downsides?

The app requires the user to own a PayPal account in order to list or pay for things.

2. Wish

What is it?

Wish is an online shop that sells stuff for low or discounted prices.

What can you buy?

Upon setup, the user is asked to pick a number of item categories that they are interested in.

This provides a tailored view of the website’s products, which range from hats and bags, to leggings and wigs.

How much do you typically spend?

Prices are often slashed dramatically. For example, you’ll get a Bluetooth speaker reduced from €100 to €19. Or jewellery and sunglasses for under €5.

Any downsides?

Although the app offers reviews from buyers, a lot of the purchases are from unverified sources.

3. AliExpress

What is it?

AliExpress is a website and app which is an extension of online Chinese retailer Alibaba.

What can you buy?

Many items are available, from shoes to gadgets and technology.

How much do you typically spend?

Prices can range from the near-thousands right down to below a fiver for goods. For example, you’ll find a pair of unisex Vans shoes that are on sale for €55.28 instead of €87.75.

Any downsides?

Some of the prices are beyond belief, yet the site still rakes in thousands of sales every day.
