Flipboard launches iPhone app
Flipboard, the 'social magazine' that has earned a reputation as one of the best iPad apps, has launched for the iPhone.
The app has been reimagined for the iPhone's smaller screen but still focuses on striking images and a simple navigation based on 'flipping' the screen upwards.
“With the iPhone we redesigned Flipboard for a new use case, where people want to find the things they care about even faster and multiple times every day,” said Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard.
Flipboard creates a digital magazine by allowing users to import links shared by their friends on social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, and adding a range of pre-selected channels and publications. The relevant links and updates are then imported into a magazine-style layout.
The updated app features a new 'Cover Stories' feature, designed to offer users a quick feed of new stories from all of their chosen sources. Flipboard has also added user accounts, allowing people to move seamlessly between the iPad and iPhone versions of the app.
The app has already been very well received, with numerous technology experts and analysts praising it.
Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with Gartner, said on Twitter: "And Flipboard just earned coveted spot on screen one on my iPhone." Technology blogger Rober Scoble tweeted: "WOW WOW WOW."
Flipboard for the iPad has been downloaded by one in 10 iPad owners, the company said yesterday.
