Dyson's latest posh lamp is a thing of industrial design beauty.

Aside from its motion sensor and tap control, it also beautifully changes the warmth of the lights based on a touch-sensitive slider or the ambient lighting temperature in the room at the time.

Aesthetically, this looks like an architect's tool.

But there are some nice functional touches, too. At the side of the main stand is a USB port that can be used to charge your phone or another gadget.

Dyson is starting to embrace the 'internet of things' in some of its newer design plans, with the Lightcycle slotting in courtesy of control from a phone app. This basically lets you customise precise lighting modes, from studying and relaxing to precision.

When using the motion sensor, you can be pretty sure that you won't waste energy as it switches off after about a minute without any activity detected. This doesn't suit all uses, though: it gets a bit irritating having to wave it back on if you're reading or watching something and want to leave the light on in the background.

Even still, longevity is not something you have to worry about with the Dyson lamp. At least, not with the actual light, which is designed to last over 50 years.

This is no casual desk lamp purchase. Nor is it really a fashion item for a living room. Dyson is clearly aiming the Lightcycle at artistic professionals and precision tradesmen.

Even so, it makes a superb general light for any kind of work activity that takes place on a desk. I've had it for a couple of weeks and I love it.

I'd definitely consider buying one, although only if I knew that I was going to spend a certain amount of time specifically at my main home desk. This is in contrast to, say, using a laptop on a couch or being on the road a lot (although there is actually a feature on the app that allows for changes in location).

If a modernist, architect-style lamp is what you're after, this is superb.
