IT wasn't the typical demonstration of 21st century technology. The smell of cattle dung hung heavy in the air at Balla Mart in Co Mayo as Taoiseach Enda Kenny pulled on a white coat and auctioned a heifer online to raise €1,400 for charity.

The sale was to highlight the latest developments in the drive to bring high-speed broadband to rural Ireland.

The proceedings at Balla Livestock Mart were relayed live to Belcarra Community Centre and with Manulla National School, where the Taoiseach met pupils who are all equipped with tablet technology.

As a surprise to the children, the Taoiseach put the high-speed broadband to the test when he Skyped Mayo senior footballer Donal Vaughan to ask about the upcoming championship.
