I'm not sold on smartwatches yet, partly because they're still too bulky. Even the svelte Jony Ive, Apple's celebrity industrial designer, looked a little less sleek when he appeared with the company's new Watch gadget strapped to his wrist last Tuesday.
One way that many manufacturers (including Apple) are getting over this nerd chic niche is to offer designer-style watch customisation refinement. Asus's Zenwatch is a case in point. Its default configuration comes with a leather strap. True, this means it doesn't have the kind of anti-perspiration resistancy that some rivals' straps have. But it's meant to give the look and feel of a premium device. The actual gadget is very similar to a vanilla Android Wear smartwatch, with little extra customisation available.
