Apple update 'makes iPad a completely new product'
Apple has released a new version of the iOS mobile operating system that runs its iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices.
The latest version, 4.2, brings several changes including streaming of music, video and pictures to Apple TVs and wireless printing.
The iPhone and iPod touch have been using iOS 4 for some time so the most significant changes are for users of the iPad, who until today have been using iOS 3.
Features familiar to most iPhone users, including multi-tasking, app folders, fast switching between apps and Game Centre are now available for the iPad.
Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, said in a press release: “iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season.”
iOS 4.2 includes AirPlay, which allows iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users to stream content wirelessly to an Apple TV or to wireless speakers, and AirPrint, which allows wireless printing to compatible printers.
The new operating system means that, for the first time, Apple’s iOS devices are all on the same version of the mobile operating system.
