Alcatel's budget phone is phab
Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 Price: €250 Rating: ****
One of the downsides to the euro's collapse is that gadgets made outside the Eurozone (which is almost all of them) are about to get a lot more expensive. But an exception might be Alcatel, the French handset maker known for its budget smartphones but which is now starting to challenge top Android names like Samsung, HTC and Sony.
Its new One Touch Idol 3 is an attractive, slim 5.5-inch Android phablet with a good screen, great speakers and a decent enough (13-megapixel) camera. It also has the knacky feature of dual speakers and microphones meaning that there's no 'wrong' way up when answering a call. This will appeal to plenty of people who have to rummage in a bag or pocket for their phone before it rings out.
But best of all is its price: less than half the cost of a Samsung, Sony or HTC 'phablet'. And a smaller 4.7-inch version is also available for around €50 less.
