A rapidly growing baby food brand - with a social conscience - is just about to shelves in Supervalu and Boots in Ireland.

Piccolo is going from strength to strength with a projected turnover of £4m (€4.6m) in its second year - and founder Cat Gazzoli has just been shortlisted for The Grocer’s Entrepreneur of the Year award.

So with an array of products to choose from for your little munchkin, what makes Piccolo different from the rest?

"No one has done a proposition around the Mediterranean approach and my foods offer these blends and spices at an early age of around six months, so these recipes are quite unique," Gazzoli told independent.ie.

Not the average food entrepreneur, Gazzoli started out her career working for the UN, supporting food agencies and campaigning for good, healthy food to be understood and available.

After the birth of her child, she moved to London and led the UK arm of Slow Food, a global, grassroots organisation with that marries the pleasure of food with a commitment to the community and the environment.

Realising that people did not seem to give their babies a variety of flavours and textures to help them develop their palate Gazzoli decided to launch her own business and Piccolo was born in 2016.

"Our best seller is spring greens - with pear and apple; the baby is getting the vegetables in but we're also making it appetising," said Gazzoli.

"We want to get nutritionally balanced baby food pouches full of Mediterranean ingredients like kale, beetroot and chickpeas to parents all over Ireland; it's convenient, not just for parents who drink green juice, do yoga and do their weekly shop in fancy farmers markets.

"When parents buy Piccolo, they are on the go. All of our recipes are available and we encourage parents to make all of our blends at home but of course that can be quite cumbersome."

The Piccolo pouches are set to launch in to SuperValu and Boots in the next two weeks - and children attending Water Babies classes can look forward to a sample also in the coming weeks.

Piccolo is retailing at €1.39 for Stage 1 (from around six months) and €1.89 (from around 7 months) for Stage 2.
