One in four small and medium enterprises (SMEs) here doesn't have a website and many fear that lack of technical know how is holding them back.

Crucially, the vast majority of Irish businesses are still not equipped to take and process consumer sales online.

Just over a third of firms that do have a website can process payments online and just 42pc process sales orders online - that's according to the IE Digital Health Index produced by IE Domain Registry (IEDR).

It has launched its €150,000 OPTIMISE Fund for 2016.

The fund is to support Irish SMEs and micro- enterprises in enhancing their online presence and in becoming e-commerce enabled.

Since 2011, the OPTIMISE Fund has provided funding to 75 Irish businesses.
