Independent.ie launches new section for SME sector
AT a time when around 200,000 SMEs are helping to drive the economic recovery, Independent.ie is beefing up its coverage of this growth sector and today launches its new small business section.
From daily news updates to a new advice centre, the small business section will provide a one-stop-shop for SMEs.
Featured entrepreneurs will bring you their success stories. And first up is tech guru Pat Phelan from Trustev, who speaks about the company's US expansion.
Meanwhile, the advice centre will provide you with the latest tax and legal tips and this week Grant Thornton's Jim Kelly explains how the Start Your Own Business Scheme can cut your income tax bill.
And Alan O'Driscoll from Flynn O'Driscoll will focus on employment law and how to avoid costly mistakes when hiring staff.
The section will also feature your own stories – with everything from the corner shop to the next technology flotation.
Other regular contributors will include Irish Independent and Sunday Independent columnist and Dragon's Den presenter Richard Curran, as well as economist Dan O'Brien.
And specialists like technology editor Adrian Weckler, and Superquinn founder Feargal Quinn will also bring knowledge and advice.
SMEs account for just under seven out of 10 people employed in the economy, proving that the sector already punches above its weight in terms of job creation.
But one of the biggest challenges facing the economy is unemployment; and while the figures are falling, statistics show that if every one of the 23 million European SMEs currently in existence hired one person it would sort out this problem across the continent.
