The battering which Storm Rachel gave this country last week could make tents and picnic tables the furthest thing from your mind - but now is a good time to stock up on camping gear and other outdoor recreation equipment.

The cost of equipment for camping and open-air recreation has dived by 9pc over the last year, according to the latest official inflation figures. This was one of the biggest price drops recorded for 2014.

That long sought after camera could also be more in your reach than ever - the price of photographic equipment has slipped 10.4pc over the last year. Fans of spuds should also be happy - potatoes are one of the foods that have come down in price the most over the last year, dropping almost 11pc. The price of pork and frozen fish has fallen by about 6pc.

However, yummy mummies are paying 4pc more for baby food than they did a year ago, while the price of a bag of crisps is up almost 5pc. At almost 12pc, motor insurance saw one of the biggest price increases over the last year.
