Entrepreneur Nichola Butler has said that she has saved a tidy sum on her home insurance by making a few simple switches on her policy.

The Carlow resident, who owns the online clothing company 'Baby Intrigue', said that by decreasing the building and contents sum on her home insurance policy, she was able to make savings of almost €150 on her premium.

She explained that one the reasons she did this is because her home is now worth just "one-third of what (she) paid for it".

"I deducted things like accidental damage from my policy as I was paying an extra cost for that, and never actually used it in all the years I've had household insurance," the mother-of-two said.

"Specifying high valued items on your policy also pumps up the premium so it's wise for people to get proper valuations on items so they are not paying more than they should be for any one item specified on the policy.

"I always had things specified that were worth a lot of money but this year I didn't because it would have added an extra €150 onto my premium."
