Super switcher: Electricity

For Tallaght resident Jen Keane, a major perk of being a customer of Bord Gáis for the past few years has been the ability to get preferential tickets for shows at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin.

However, in recent months she says she feels there have been fewer presales events for Bord Gáis customers and her loyalty is wavering. At the same time, she would like to upgrade her home heating to make it more smart-compatible so it can be controlled remotely from a smart phone app.

"I don't shop around as often as I should and I know there are probably better deals out there if I go looking for them," she says.

"A quick trip to showed me that this is in fact the case. Almost all of the major energy providers in Ireland are offering smart device installation when you change to them as a new customer."

That's a massive incentive for Keane because that means the devices are either free or offered at a significant discount.

"If I have to pay myself, they're expensive to buy and I'll need the services of an electrician to plug them in - that's not the kind of thing I would do myself," she says.

At the moment, Keane is looking at the various options on offer, but is confident a better deal with more smart-functionality is just around the corner.

"If I switch, not only will I get cheaper electricity, I'll also benefit from bonus incentives; why wouldn't anyone do it?"
