Readers of the Irish Independent's special supplement on switching utility providers flooded our website yesterday with queries on where to get the best deals.

Thousands of people who engaged with 'Switching Saturday' logged on to to get advice from consumer expert Sinéad Ryan.

The majority of questions related to banks, followed by people seeking information on switching car and house insurance.

"There were lots of very specific and intelligent, well-thought-out questions from contributors who were very aware of the intricate details of their consumer products, but bemused and confused about the complexity of the market," Sinéad said.

She said that the experience of most readers was the banks wanted them to remain apathetic and oblivious to the options available.

"Many people simply wanted to know what they bought, and why. Banks, in particular, have a lesson to learn in consumer discourse and offering simply explanations so desperately sought," said Sinéad.

Several questions related to deposits in banks. With historically low interest rates people wanted to know what to do.

Sinéad advised several people that paying down loans faster than planned was a good option.

"What I learned is that the institutions better watch out. Switchers are on the march. They are learning and moving with a click.

"They are comparing, parsing and demanding. Good on them," Sinéad said.
