Student contents cover

STUDENTS have been advised not to go off to college without contents insurance cover.

The chances are that most students will have some expensive items vulnerable to theft, loss or damage, so it's worth protecting them, according to the National Consumer Agency.

It is possible, and cheaper, for students to get cover as a top-up to their parents' home insurance policy.

The additional cost of adding cover for students' belongings ranges from €34 to almost €220 and includes all-risks cover, according to an NCA study.

Before choosing a policy, ask if there are any exclusions and what excess applies.

The excess can range from €200 to €500, depending on the provider, so students need to be sure they could afford to pay it, if they have to make a claim.
