Proposed legislation which would require landlords to give at least 90 days' notice of eviction and allow tenants to see rents previously charged at a property is to come before the Dáil.
The Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Bill 2018, introduced by the Social Democrats, would require tenants who have been living at a property for more than one year to get four months' notice.
Those living there for less than one year would be entitled to a minimum of 90 days' notice.
The bill also proposes a 'register of rents' managed by the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) to ensure rents in rent pressure zones are not raised beyond the 4pc-per-year that is allowed under current legislation.
"If a tenancy changes, there is no way a new tenant could establish what the old rent was, and they should have a right to know that," TD Róisín Shortall said.
The party said the bill was also designed with a view to Ireland moving toward longer-term renting which "works for both landlords and tenants".
It is understood the Government will not be opposing the bill, but is concerned about some elements of it.
Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy is to bring forward his own legislation in this area.
