Just one in three women has a pension, with far more men having a retirement plan in place.
Many people expect to rely on their husband or partner for their income in retirement.
Some 37pc of women have a pension compared with 57pc of men, according to research carried out by pensions and investment firm Standard Life ahead of International Women's Day.
However, the research showed women tend to save more a month than men.
One in five women who do not have a pension said they would rely on their husband or partner for their retirement income.
Some 60pc of women said they would rely on the State pension. Another 6pc expect an inheritance, compared with 13pc of men.
