There are definite signs of life in some parts of the housing market... in other parts it's going completely gangbusters. South Dublin is like 2006 all over again. How can it not end badly? For a couple trading up to buy a €500,000 home, looking for a €300,000 mortgage over 30 years at a variable rate. Ulster Bank has the best rate but it's only for special u-first customers. You'll need to move your current account over to Ulster Bank to get this rate. But for €2,000 a year, you'd be mad not too.

Best: Ulster Bank discounted €1,406.42

Avoid: ICS €1,574

Saving: €2,010.96 per year

If your insurance company has a football stadium or a sporting trophy named after it, either here or in another country, chances are that they'll be pretty expensive. Cover for a €400,000 home in Sligo town. Rebuild €150,000, contents 20 per cent. Excess €500. No claims. Couple of 40-year-olds. Usual locks and alarms.

Best: Quotedevil €187.01

Avoid: AXA €296.70

Saving: €109.69

AIB has the best credit card rate on the market by a mile. But you'll have to do all your business online if you want to use it. That shouldn't be much of a problem to skinny-jean-wearing hipsters from Google or Facebook, but Auntie Marigold from Borris may not be quite so keen. It's far, far cheaper to use this card if you tend to rack up bills on your plastic. On €1,500 over a year.

Best: AIB Click 13.6 per cent

Avoid: Ulster Bank Classic 22.7 per cent

Saving: Up to €136.50 per year

Sure, why would you ever leave this place? Some people obviously want to. It's alright as long as they come back. Best way to get them back is to pay for only one year's travel insurance. Long Stay Travel Insurance for one year in Canada, including ski cover.

Best: €238

Avoid: Insure & Go €893.98

Saving: €655.98

The difference between the big name insurers and the smaller, slicker players is getting bigger and bigger. Cover for a €26,000 2010 Audi A4 tdi 2.0 for a Monkstown, Co Dublin, 45-year-old male driver. No points or claims. Excess €300. Parked off road.

Best: Quotedevil €398

Avoid: Aviva €944.98

Saving: €546.98
