Hundreds of readers contacted us through Facebook yesterday to tell us of their experience renewing their motor insurance.

Here is a selection of what they told us:

"Ten years no claims, no penalty points, no parking fines - [but] our insurance has doubled this year. We asked the insurance company why and they said it was due to all the claims being made and the fact we have a car older than 10 years."

- Caroline White

"My husband's renewal is in - €400 last year, €675 this year. No convictions or penalty points. Full licence and 10+ years with no claims. The car is a 98 Renault Clio. He only drives it to work and home, five miles each way. He works shifts so we need the second car.

"We have to seriously consider getting rid of a car that passes the NCT every year - just because of its age."

- Aine Gogarty

"I was eligible for a 45pc discount this year and my insurance was still €250 higher than last year. Outrageous."

- Aidan Barrett

"My 25-year-old son has a full, clean driving licence for almost seven years. He was out of the country for three years. He got three quotes for a 00 Nissan Micra, which has a new NCT and is valued at less than €500. He was quoted €6,873, €2,570 and €2,450. Each company stated it was because he had no 'no claims bonus' as he had not been insured in Ireland for more than two years."
