Me and my money: Grainne McElwain
This TV host loves her car but says petrol is her 'biggest ongoing waste of money'
TV presenter Gráinne McElwain has got good mileage out of one very good buy.
"I bought a beautiful lace dress in Nice for €300 three years ago. I've worn it everywhere between weddings, balls and nights out on the town," she said.
"There have been many spending mistakes but a sheepskin leather coat with fake fur on the collar stands out. I thought it looked fabulous when I tried it on in the shop but it looked awful when I got home. Overpriced and I've never worn it.
"I'm a spender and I like buying clothes and shoes but I am good at saving money as well. I put aside a certain amount of money each month with the credit union. I find them very easy to deal with and I don't feel they are taking all my money on fees, unlike banks.
"Petrol is my biggest on-going waste of money. It's for work and I know it is necessary. I drive a lot with work so I spend a lot on getting places. The bus service or trains are definitely not the same or as dependable, particularly when you live in the country and depend on your car so much. If I could buy anything, I would buy a villa beside the sea, in the South of France or Italy.
"Some years back, I travelled on a train from Nice passing by Villefranche-sur-Mer and fell in love with the area. The sun definitely makes a difference.
"I have a black Opel Astra convertible. I love it and it cost me more than I had at the time but I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. I have never bought shares -- I was told you should only buy them if you can afford to lose the money on them. I can't afford that yet but maybe one day."
